Development of an Online Medical Record Management System

Manual keeping of patients’ medical records and time spent in organizing the files has led to exploration of alternative ways of enhancing service delivery without compromising their quality. This research work examines the importance of Electronic Medical Record in tackling these challenges. In this study, the researchers explored how emerging integrated technology can reduce cost of healthcare services using Electronic Medical Record System. An in-depth interview was conducted with the management of Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Nigeria in order to understand the manual way of keeping patient medical record. The study found out that the manual way of keeping patient records, registration, data collection and retrieval has a lot of shortcomings such as unauthorized access, multiple cards allocations e.t.c. It has become imperative to design an e-medical record system that will effectively manage patients’ record. Computer coding instructions such as Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft access were utilized in building the database. Database unit and system testing was done to check for data integrity. All the testing done was successful as the application met up with all the requirement specification. Using Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, Nigeria as a case study, the  researchers recommends that the hospital management should as a matter of priority employ e-medical record keeping in keeping with best global practices.
