A Holistic Architecture for Implementation of Electronic Health Record System in Nigeria

Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a health information system that is needed to achieve a sustainable and veritable healthcare delivery. However, the adoption and implementation of EHR in the health sector in most developing countries is yet to have a wide uptake. In this paper, we highlight the major challenges that affect the wide adoption and implementation of EHR in Nigerian health sector. Some of the problems include poor coordination among stakeholders caused by ad hoc, piecemeal basis implementation by foreign software developers, and applications designed to solve specific problems among others. Also, the benefits of EHR are discussed, and available open source alternatives are presented. In addition, some of the EHR implementation in Nigeria are reviewed. Furthermore, we propose an EHR implementation framework that considers the views of a community of academics, technology enthusiast, open source developers and intended users, with relevant support of regulatory bodies. This work
will contribute to the speedy attainment of the health targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria as well as the Vision 20:2020.
