The advent of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), has opened many organisations into new IT security threats, and many traditional countermeasures are becoming ineffective in dealing with them. Intrusion Prevention such as encryption, authentications are not guaranteed to work all the time. In wireless, one cannot make assumption that wireless users are trusted, because wireless access point may open the internal, non-protected network up to unknown and non-trusted users who are simply within communication boundary. With the increase in transmission of data and
information over the internet, the urgent need to protect connected systems also increases. This paper therefore developed a Wireless Intrusion Detection System for this purpose. This paper involves the practical implementation of prototype Java Based Wireless Intrusion Detection System (JBWIDS) software repudiate unauthorized users on the networks, and control the kind of operation performed by wireless users by scanning its operation on the network. It also describes the methods of applying genetic algorithm, which helps to increase the effectiveness of the WIDS. The paper is built on a number of previous works in which neural network has been used for similar forms of classification in wired network. The Java-Based wireless intrusion detection model was implemented in a client-server model, using Net-bean 6.1.2 as Graphic User Interface (GUI) and Microsoft Access as the database. The result shows that the developed intrusion detection system was able to prevent the intruder in a wireless network.
