A Formal Activity Ontology for Postgraduate Admission Processes (A Case Study of University of Ibadan, Nigeria)
The various processes involved in gaining admission to postgraduate schools are usually
made available when the forms are out. Applicants will have to finish one process before
they embark on the next process. Hence, the processes cannot be viewed at once. In order
to readily have an available standardized structure for postgraduate admission processes
which can easily be accessed and gives applicants the domain knowledge of their area of
interest, this study builds formal activity ontology for Postgraduate (PG) admission
processes. The activity ontology has a formalized structure of PG admission processes
that enables an applicant to view the various processes involved in getting admission for
postgraduate programmers. This helps in planning ahead of time and in making the right
choice for their course of study. Description Logic (DL) was used for the formalization of
the axioms which were implemented with protégé. Ontographs for the relations were
created and competency questions in form of queries were answered. The results from
the queries help in understanding the domain structure. The activity ontology serves as a
guide for interested students and researchers on the activities involved in been offered
admission into postgraduate schools.
